Kevin Castille adds M40 American record in the 5000 to 10K

Kevin Castille, a former employee of Red's, is in the news again. Kevin left Red's and Lafayette last summer to pursue his running dream. At the age of 40, Kevin is still getting better. Good luck to Kevin and we'll keep you posted as to whether he makes the sought after Olympic Trials.

Buried in the results of the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford over the weekend was the M40 American record for 5000 meters by Kevin Castille. So three weeks after his  AR in the 10K on the same track, Kevin nearly cracked the elite 14-minute barrier. His time of 14:00.09 in an elite race beats the listed record of 14:17.36 by Brian Pope in 2004. He also broke unratified marks of 14:02.86 by Steve Plasencia and 14:13.31 by Danny Martinez.The listed M40 world record is 13:43.15 by Mohammed Ezzher of France in 2000. Kevin was a recent USATF Athlete of the Week, and he’s becoming a poster child for our niche. But he’s probably shooting for the 13:50 “B” standard for the Eugene Olympic Trials. So he’s not far off!!

MS 150 Hammond to McComb

 The ride was great!! Very hilly, even hillier than I remembered and as you know there are no hills in lafayette to train on!!! Thank goodness for cycling classes..they are really the only way to train for these rides without going to St. Francisville.
    There were over 1300 riders this year. This year's pack of riders included not only road bikes, but also mountain bikes, recumbants, tandem bikes (I drafted behind a tandem bike for the first time ever on this ride. It was the best draft I have ever ridden at 22 mph!! WOW), and the first time ever in the ms ride...an elitpibike!!!!!!!  
    Here is a link to show you what an eliptibike is (it is a cross between a bicycle and an eliptical machine..pretty interesting ( I finished the first day in a little over 4 hours, and the lady on the eliptibike was about 30 minutes behind me!!!--I did not see her on day 2 however :)

Here is the link to the team that Terri Dawes and I were on.  There were 36 members on our team and we raised $29.486.50 for MS!!!!! We were the second highest fundraising team this year. The entire race raised $650,000 for those living in Louisiana with MS.

It is always a fun time in the park after the ride....they have massage tables lined up and all the food and beverages than you can possibly imagine!! (red beans and rice, stuffed chicken, boiled shrimp, salad, corn and crab soup...then the next morning they have a whole breakfast spread out for us...eggs, bacon, biscuits, muffins, yogurt, cereal and most importantly...COFFEE!!)

78 miles day one, 79 miles day 2...a little over 4 hours both days....I feel great today...muscles are tired, but not sore....

another first....as I was struggling up a particularly long and steep climb a guy rode along side of me and said "Imagine you are a pretty flower floating up the hillside..." So of course on the next hundred climbs, I was a flower floating up the hill!! :)

also, every time I do a long ride I always have a song that gets stuck in my head and will play over and over during the ride...I never know where these songs come from (on the ride I did after my mother died, it was an elvis presley song...so I am pretty sure mom sent that one to me!!!)...well this rides song was "ride like the wind" by the Eagles...I coudn't even tell you the last time I heard that song....

as the lady's t-shirt read in the park after the ride..."Only a biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window"

Red's 2011 Kids Triathlon

Congratulations to all the kids who came out, competed and earned a metal at this year's annual Kids Triathlon. We would like to also thank all the parents and volunteers who make this event so much fun and a tremendous success. Also, thanks to Melissa, Brenna and all their workers who worked so hard.

Detour to Red's Sunday, July 31st

The exciting Kid's Triathlon is scheduled for this Sunday, July 31st. We would like to remind you that we will have the entrance near the tennis courts, Clara Von Drive and some of Roselawn Blvd. blocked off Sunday morning from 7:30am - 10:00am. You may need to approach Red's via Johnston Street  and enter through the drive-way near Shop Rite to avoid detours. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

This is once a year and a very successful event. We have 100 kids signed up which is at capacity. If you have already entered, the packets are available at the Pool Office (in the indoor pool facility).

John Fell is Kona Bound

Congratulations to John Fell for his performance in last month's Ironman Texas. John qualified for the Ironman World Championship by placing 3rd in his age group and finishing the 140.6 miles in a time of 9:41. The race consisted of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon (26.2 miles 42.195 km) run, raced in that order and without a break. The 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship will be held on October 8, 2011 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. It will be the 35th such Ironman Triathlon World Championships, which has been held annually in Hawaii since 1978.
